Plastic Surgeon Questions mommy makeover

What is a mommy makeover?

I heard that my friend wanted to get a mommy makeover after having her first child. What exactly is this procedure? What should one really consider before going through with it?

A mommy makeover is a combined operation that typically includes a tummy tuck with a breast procedure (augmentation, lift, reduction).
The combination of a breast procedure with an abdominoplasty is classically coined a “Mommy Makeover” because the goal is to reverse the changes brought about from bearing children and breast-feeding. The ideal combination, however, is tailored to the needs of each patient and are performed to remove excess skin and fat from the body to produce a more pleasing shape. These procedures can include arm lifts, thigh lifts, butt lifts, liposuction, tummy tucks, and breast lifts and are often done in combinations.

Mommy makeover is not a procedure per se, but truly a generic term that addresses the correction of some or all detrimental body changes after a full pregnancy. Most often, it means correction of midrift changes, encompassing mostly a tummy tuck with possible adjacent liposuctions and/or breast augmentation or lifts as required to return a mom to a fit and sexy look. Obviously, cost will vary with the number and extent of the procedures requested. Another factor is time out of work or recovery, home help, operative risks, general health condition, weight range, etc., which are factors important in considering a single versus a group of procedures. Choosing an experienced board certified plastic surgeon is very important as the risk of these procedures in un-trained or inexperienced hands can be substantial. Do your homework!
After having children, many women experience looseness in their abdominal wall skin and muscle. They develop stretch marks. They can even develop an abdominal wall hernia. This looseness occurs from the expansion of the abdominal wall while carrying their child during the pregnancy. Also, their breast can become more saggy and/or deflated from breast feeding. A mommy makeover is a surgery to reverse the abdominal wall changes and breast changes seen. A tummy tuck is a surgery that tightens the abdominal wall muscles with internal stitching, and removes the loose skin. This does leave a low abdominal wall scar and one at the belly button, but it can significantly improve the way a tummy looks. Many women can get back to wearing a bikini. The breasts can be changed in a number of ways, depending on the what the goals are. Some women have large sagging breasts that require only a lift (or maybe a lift and reduction). Other breasts maybe be deflated and may require and implant with or without a lift procedure. Things to consider before any mommy makeover procedure are
1. to be done breast feeding for at least 6 months 2. try to be near an ideal body weight 3. make sure your are healthy without any major medical issues 4. And most importantly is that your seek a board certified plastic surgeon to discuss your questions, goals, and expectations, and to assure your are in the most capable hands for your safety and outcome.
A "mommy makeover" typically involves a breast procedure (implants and/or breast lift) combined with an abdominal procedure (tummy tuck and/or liposuction). This procedure is designed to help women restore their body back to pre-pregnancy form.

Hi!

A "mommy makeover" is any combination of procedures to restore the body to the free pregnancy form. Most include some type of breast and also abdominal procedure. This may be breast augmentation, breast lift, liposuction, abdominoplasty, fat transfer, or any other combination of procedures.

Sincerely,

A "mommy makeover" is cosmetic surgery on the breast and tummy. It may consist of a breast lift and reduction or implants as well as a tummy tuck. Liposuction may also be added to the thighs if desired. There are risks and complications associated with any procedure including, but not limited to infection, bleeding, scarring, and possible need for revision surgery. You should keep this in mind before having any kind of plastic surgery procedure.
Pregnancy causes a number of changes in a woman’s body. These changes can include the creation of muscle laxity of the stomach and looseness/excess skin. Other changes can include sagging of the breasts, loss of ‘perkiness’ and loss of breast volume. At times there can also be some post pregnancy fat accumulation in the hips and/or thighs. A ‘Mommy Makeover’ is a combination of cosmetic surgical procedures designed to restore a woman to her pre-pregnancy form. Most commonly this is a combination of a tummy tuck with a breast augmentation and often also includes a breast lift a possibly liposuction.

A "mommy makeover" is usually a tummy tuck, and some sort of a breast lift. With or without implants. Sometimes some lipo is involved, too. Best to wait until you are done having children.

A "mommy makeover" is simply more than one procedure, usually a breast procedure and an abdominal procedure to correct the effects of having children. It depends on the patient. It could range from liposuction of the abdomen to a tummy tuck to correct a muscle bulge from pregnancy. Breast procedures could range from a lift, to implants, or both. You should have a consultation with a plastic surgeon that is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Inc. We actually encourage patients to visit more than one board certified plastic surgeon. A "board certified cosmetic surgeon" does not have the same credentials as a board certified plastic surgeon. The American Board of Plastic Surgery Inc, is the only organization recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties. These members must complete a full general surgery residency of 5 years after medical school and then a 2-3 year plastic surgery residency before taking oral and written boards. They must retake their board exam every 10 years. "Board Certified Cosmetic Surgeons" do not have to complete ANY surgical training. They simply pay a fee to join as this is not a certification recognized or monitored by the American Board of Medical Specialties. I understand that was a lot of extra information, but you need to check out your surgeon's credentials. My first priority is educating patients.

A "mommy makeover" has many possibilities such as: increased cellulite in the thighs and buttocks, stretch marks, and belly pouch. Other issues of more importance regarding health could be: urinary incontinence, loose vaginal tissue, irregular tears, or problems contouring of vulva and perineum due to birth trauma. Each case needs to be evaluated individually.
