Emergency Physician Questions Diabetes

My mom has chronic kidney disease and now suffers from water retention. What should I do?

My mother, who has chronic kidney disease, is now retaining a lot of water. This water retention started a few days ago. What's the best way to rid her of this uncomfortable retention of water? Should I be worried?

The best way to get her treated is to have her seen by a nephrologist, a kidney specialist. IF she becomes short of breath, light headed or having chest pains, bring her to the nearest ER to have her evaluated.
You have to restrict water, low-salt diet, and low potassium. Get her checked for blood work for BUN, creatinine, AND ELECTROLYTES.

Your mom will need to see an internist or a kidney doctor (nephrologist).
Good luck
Yes, you should be concerned. She needs to see a nephrologist to decide if she is a candidate for dialysis. Medicines may not work since her kidneys are working well. She needs medical attention urgently. If water builds up, there is risk of heart failure.
Get under the care of a competent kidney specialist. She will probably need diuretics, if not now on them, & perhaps dialysis. You did not tell me how bad her kidney disease is and whether she is on medication or dialysis, so I cannot precisely answer your question except to say get under the care of a good nephrologist if not already there & follow his or her instructions.
