Cardiologist Questions Steroids

Are steroids okay for people at risk of heart disease?

My husband has inflammation and a respitory infection. The doctor says he is also at a high risk of heart disease. Would steroids be recommended for him? Is there a danger to the heart?

Yes, better to avoid steroids.
Depending on the inflammation and the degree of risk of heart disease, steroids may or may not be safe. If the inflammation is severe & the heart risk small then steroids if properly used should be safe. If the reverse is true then be very careful. Steroids will raise blood sugar & cause fluid retention so consider the benefit ratio with your Dr.
