Infertility Specialist Questions Plan B

Can taking Plan B for a while cause infertility?

I have been regularly taking Plan B as a form of birth control and I am now worried that it could cause me to be infertile. Is this true?

Plan B will probably not cause permanent infertility, but is actually only meant for “emergency” use. It is composed of hormones like those in oral contraceptives. Why not take oral contraceptives which are as safe and far more reliable?
No, but keep in mind it is not an ideal form of birth control. It is less effective than other forms of contraception.
Plan B is a short version of the pill with a more concentrated dosing. Any dose of artificial hormone will suppress natural ovarian functioning but even a high dose of birth control pill will not usually cause a permanent infertility, ovaries usually will return back to normal functioning in 6-12months. So if you are thinking about conception in less than 12months, it’s a good idea to come off of any artificial hormone and let your periods come back to normal functioning on their own and use a barrier contraception like condoms to help control exposure without interfering with hormone production.

It will not cause infertility, but it is not advisable to keep on taking plan B. I want you to think about a contraception method on a regular basis if you are not ready to have a child yet.
