What are the potential treatments for TMJ?

I have severe TMJ, and it is really effecting my life. What are the potential treatments for TMJ. Are there any permanent treatments?

Yes, and it is best to start with the most conservative options available. Typically, most patients would begin using a type of bite guard appliance. An MRI is often needed to diagnose the condition more completely. TMJ pain can be muscular or within the joint (or both) and needs a full exam and work up to be able to tell what might work for you.
Treatment can range from medication, to bite appliances, to close or open joint surgery. You must see an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to make the proper diagnosis of what is causing your joint problem. Then a treatment plan can be formulated.
There are many levels of treatment for TMJ disease, depending on the severity of the disease. It can be from non-invasive, such as physical therapy to TMJ appliance, to the invasive one, i.e., surgical intervention. Permanent treatment also varies base upon the degree of the problem and varies from patient to patient. My recommendation for you is to seek treatment from an Oral Maxillofacial surgeon who is specialized in TMJ.
Good luck.
