My husband had a car accident and suffered from a serious injury that required him to have surgery immediately. The bones in his leg were shattered. How long should we expect him to recover?

Recovery from major trauma may take months or years. It varies because of severity of the injuries, the time in bed, the physical and mental health of the patient before the injury, emotional strength, and social support. SO sorry to hear. IT really depends on extent of fractures and location so it hard to say. Bones take weeks to heal.
It depends on the type of procedure, surgeon an facility and his need for additional operations. Based on my experience it may take a minimum of 6 weeks to recovery taking other factors into consideration.
