Surgeon Questions Hernia Surgery

Does sex after surgery carry any risks?

My husband recently underwent a surgery for hernia. How long should we wait to have sex?

Discuss with Surgeon but 4-6 weeks.
You need to talk to your doctor before you do anything in the way of sex. The damage that can be done can put him back in the hospital. Take a cold shower and watch HGTV to get you thinking about something else. I wish you well. oledochouse
Yes, of course. Even before surgery!
Dear Patient:

There are missing pieces of information: size of hernia, location, mesh or no mesh, age of the patient, and obviously when doing sex (there is a variety of intensity). In general terms, sexual activity should not be contra indicated after surgery, as long as you practice it safely, after surgery. For at least a few weeks, the patient should avoid lifting too much weight, therefore, this should not be part of the activity during intimacy.

Good luck,

Let pain be the determining factor. If it hurts don’t do it. There is no specific length of time to abstain fron sex.
Depends what type of repair he had and the type of hernia that you not specifying. Normally following laparoscopic surgery of groin hernias the recovery for activities does not need a downtown time.
If is an open hernia repair with large scar, a time off is required before physical activities are resuming.
You should feel free and confident to discuss those matters with the surgeon.
It will depend if it is open surgery or laparoscopic surgery. For most patients three weeks work fine, but some surgeons recommend 8 weeks. I personally recommend my patients 3 weeks or the time that they need.
I typically recommend no strenuous activity (sex, lifting more than 20 lbs, aggressive exercising) for about 2 weeks after surgery. Let pain be you and your husband's guide. If an activity causes pain or discomfort, you should avoid that activity until the symptoms go away.
