Oncologist Questions Cancers

Should I take my son to the doctor for his mole?

My son has a mole on top of his head, and I'm worried that it could be cancerous. What steps should I be taking to check it out? It doesn't look like it's gotten bigger since I noticed it.

Hello. You are asking an important question. Skin abnormalities are quite common. They are most likely non cancerous moles. However, if you are noticing a new lesion, it is important to have it investigated. Many skin abnormalities can be diagnosed by an experienced dermatologist who maybe able to identify the type of lesion. Many times the only way to know for sure is to do a biopsy.
There is a process to follow. No one should say "no" based on no look and not knowing of more options. If concerned, do something to put at ease. If relationship allows, call a doc who knows you. Take a photo, offer to send to doc. Pediatric primary is first choice.
Take him to his pediatrician to look at the mole. Document the size with a photo and a ruler next to the mole so you can accurately tell if it is staying the same size.
