Is knee surgery advisable for a 72 year old patient?

My father is suffering from a lot of knee pain due to rheumatoid arthritis. Would you recommend knee surgery for his condition?

There are several factors here - is arthritis severely painful and limiting?

What is your fathers general medical condition - Does his doctor feel that his surgical risk is acceptable

And, what does Orthopaedic Surgeon think and h ad be all communicate about this
Knees can be replaced if that is the only procedure left but it is only 80% successful.

Great question! There are many causes of joint pain, so to further determine what is causing the knee pain and if surgery is needed you need further evaluation. Historically, key blood tests and X-rays will likely need to be done, too. In either case, I would advise you to follow up with a rheumatologist for further evaluation as there can be many different causes for your symptoms and it should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
