Respiratory Therapist Questions Asthma

Is swimming a safe sport for asthma patients?

I have been told that swimming is good for asthma patients. My son is 8 years old and has severe asthma, but I'm scared for him to start swimming. Is it worth starting?

The chlorine in pools can irritate the airways and possibly trigger a bronchospasm (especially indoor pools with less ventilation). I would recommend mineral water pools or if nothing else a salt water pool with very little added chemicals. In any situation, always carry a rescue inhaler and he should be supervised by people aware of his condition and what to do in the event of an asthma attack. Consult with the treating physician for specific recommendations based on his particular case.
