There are thousands of treatment options available. Follow the recommendations of a doctor you trust.
It really depends on where the pain and symptoms are; if it's isolated to one area, or if it radiates. I would start with over-the-counter NSAIDs such as Advil and Ibuprofen as needed. Try applying heat or ice to the affected area. If your pain persists, the best doctor to evaluate first would be your primary care or a pain specialist. The pain specialist can evaluate your pain and get the details to decide which specialist you would need to see, if any. Hopefully it's a condition that can be treated with physical therapy and medications. It's always best to schedule an appointment to see exactly what your diagnosis is, so you can get the best treatment and outcomes.

The musculoskeletal system in our bodies is the spine and extremities with all the soft tissue attachments including cartilage, muscle and tendon, ligaments, and the peripheral nerves that supply the extremity. For starters, one can always try RICE treatment: Rest; Ice; Compression; Elevation.

Unfortunately it’s too many unknown variables. It is best for him to see a doctor, preferably a good primary care physician or orthopedic surgeon.
