Not easy to answer this question without knowing the details of your dad's surgery or where the surgery will be performed. Typically, most patients may spend a day or two in the ICU. The goal is to have the patient home when he or she has recovered from the surgery and has not had any complications.
It depends on what type of open heart surgery your father is going to have. But 90% of the time the stay is only 24 hours.
