Nephrologist (Kidney Specialist) Questions Urinary Tract Infections

Can a UTI lead to kidney damage?

My friend has recurrent UTIs and she's trying to figure out with her gyno how to treat them and prevent them from returning. Can this potentially harm her kidneys eventually?
