Nephrologist (Kidney Specialist) Questions Urinary Tract Infections

How does a UTI turn into a kidney infection?

My daughter had to be rushed to the hospital because of a kidney infection. The doctors said that she had let her UTI go too far, which is why the kidney infection developed. But, how exactly does it develop? How long does it take a UTI to turn into a kidney infection?

Very complicated answer. But anatomically the urinary system is connected and bacteria travel. Hope that helps!
Urinary tract includes the kidneys, ureter, bladder, and urethra. If UTI goes untreated, it can affect the kidney and cause kidney infection or pyelonephritis. If your child is young, it may be wise to rule out any reflux disease (viscounts ureteralreflux), especially if she gets recurrent UTIs.
