Lithium disilicate and zirconium....most of the time.
The usual materials in modern dentistry for crowns are Lithium Disilicate, and Zirconium Dioxide.
Porcelain and Zirconia
Today most crowns are made of porcelain or zirconia which is a tooth colored metallic crown.
Traditionally 3 different materials: gold, zirconia, or porcelain
Most modern dental crowns are made of zirconia-oxide which is a very strong ceramic used alone or with a porcelain covering to enhance the aesthetics if that is very important to match the adjacent teeth. The other material often used is the brand e.max which is lithium disilicate which is a very aesthetic glass ceramic but not at strong.
Gold, Zirconium, e-max and combinations.
Modern dental crowns are either monolithic (single layer of material) or non-monolithic (multiple layers of materials). Monolithic crowns are typically made out of high strength ceramic or metal. Examples include Zirconia crown, Lithium disilicate crowns, or your classic gold crown. Non-monolithic crowns are typically made with a structural base layer of either metal or ceramic, topped with some form of porcelain or ceramic for aesthetics and function.
