To preserve tooth structure.
Dental crowns are dental restorations that cover most of the portion of the tooth that you can see above the gum line. Sometimes they extend and cover part of the root to make sure there will not be recurrent decay. The benefits of a crown are that you get to keep your tooth that was decayed or broken do to accidents or trauma. You can chew and use your tooth as before.
A crown is usually needed to restore a tooth with large decay or fractures. It restores the tooth providing complete coverage of the natural tooth and can prevent further cavities/fractures from occurring and prevent eventual tooth loss.
Often times a crown will prevent further fracture and breakdown of the tooth. It will likely last longer than a filling. Also, there is a chance that you may loose your tooth unless you get the crown depending on the diagnosis.
It will depend on the reason you are getting a dental crown. Dental crowns are necessary for teeth that had root canal therapy and are also good for teeth with large existing fillings - this protects the teeth from fracture and leakage of older fillings. Crowns can also be used to improve esthetics.
