Most common symptoms of low sugar are shakiness, sweating, dizziness, irritability, hunger, moody, or change in alertness. I always recommend patients wearing a CGM (continuous glucose monitor) that you can also track and be notified if his sugars are dropping.
At age 12 or younger, sometimes they get sleepy. Particularly the younger ones. Age twelve usually have the adrenaline response or shaky, sweaty, tremor, and hunger feelings. Of course, it is slowly going down it affects judgement and the brain. Seizures are fairly common in kids with low blood sugars. If that occurs, you need to know if they are epileptic or are they just having low blood sugars. They play hard and the adrenaline in high when they relax the adrenaline is lower and the blood glucose may drop. 12 is a difficult age. Younger sleepiness and older typical hunger and shakiness.

Dear patient,

The early symptoms of hypoglycemia can include shaking, sweating, palpitations, dizziness, hunger...the late symptoms include mental changes such as memory loss, confusion, and coma. If your child is on insulin, he should be familiar with the time of its activity, need for not missing meals, effect of exercise on sugar levels, as well as treatment of early stages prior to mental changes. You should discuss these factors with your doctor.

At age 12 you should have a continous glucose monitor. It is considered standard of care. You can watch all his glucose levels be it up or down. Dr. Norwood
DOES YOUR SON HAVE DIABETES? ON MEDICATION? IF LOW BLOOD SUGAR OCCURRING SUDDENLY, CAUSES A FAST HEART BEAT (PALPITATIONS), SWEATING, HUNGER, ANXIETY, A SUSTAINED LOW BLOOD SUGAR CAUSE CONFUSION, ABNORMAL BEHAVIOR, AND LOSS OF CONSCIOUSNESS (COMA) IF PROLONGED.
