Hematology-Pathologist Questions Heavy menstruation

What bleeding disorders cause heavy menstruation?

I've been experiencing heavy menstruation, and my OB-GYN thinks that this could be from a bleeding disorder since my birth control isn't lightening my period at all. Heavy bleeding during my period lasts for five days, so I know it isn't normal. What bleeding disorders can cause heavy menstruation?

It could any number of problems from a hormonal imbalance, adverse medication reaction, a low or dysfunctional platelet disorder, or a true coagulation disorder such as Von Willebrand's disease or another bleeding diathesis.
I doubt this is from a bleeding disorder. The only acquired disorders are those caused by medications such as aspirin and the NSAIDs. If you are not taking these medications and heavy menstruation continues you could see a hematologist for testing.
