Dentist Questions Gingivitis

What can cause gingivitis?

My dentist found that I have gingivitis and now I'm going through treatment for it and changing some of my oral care routines at home to reverse it. But I'm not sure how this disease developed in the first place. What usually causes gingivitis?

The most common cause of gingivitis is plaque accumulated on teeth, causing inflammation of the surrounding gum tissues. Gingivitis is common, and anyone can develop it. You could get it from: smoking, dry mouth, poor nutrition, including vitamin C deficiency, and conditions that decrease immunity.

Hope this answers your question. With good oral health habits, such as brushing at least twice a day, flossing daily, and getting regular dental check-ups, you can help prevent and reverse gingivitis. For more info visit:

Gingivitis is caused by dental plaque, which is virtually 100% bacteria by weight.
First of all most everyone has gingivitis. It isn't a serious problem; however if you don't treat it, then it will progress into periodontitis and that is a huge problem because it involves bone loss. If you were to floss three days in a row and use an electric toothbrush for two minutes daily, your gingivitis should go away.
