OB-GYN (Obstetrician-Gynecologist) Questions Endometriosis

What can I do for endometriosis pain?

I'm 24 years old and my doctor just recently diagnosed me with endometriosis. She wants me to use OTC medicine and heating pads to relieve the pain. Is there anything else I can do?

There are a lot of medications for endometriosis. It depends on your age, the severity, and the grade of the disease. Consult your gynecologist.
OTC can reduce pain but if this is not sufficient you would need better control there are a number of medical treatments specifically indicated for endometriosis. This is an estrogen dependent chronic inflammatory disease. A continuous oral contraceptive designed to diminish or stop menstruation can help a significant percentage of patients. If it doesn't help switching to a different pill will not help. A Mirena IUS can help or progestins orally or by injection. Sometimes another medication called Orilissa can help or another injection course called a GnRH agonist. There are indications for surgery but your Gynecologist can determine if this is indicated.
There are other options that range from oral prescribed medication or an injection that can be administered here in the office.
