Radiologist Questions Lung CT scan

What can lung CT scans detect?

My doctor said to me that I need to have a lung CT scan to see if I have any physical signs of cancer. What can a radiologist see with a lung CT?

CT scans have become very useful to detect lung nodules that may represent cancer. Further evaluation of suspicious nodules may be necessary to confirm or exclude malignancy (e.g., biopsy).
The ct scan can show lung nodules and masses. Bases in the size, physical appearance, location, border whether smooth, irregular, infiltrative, spiculated etc can predict likelihood of malignancy. Multiplicity of nodules can say something about metastatic disease from another primary cancer source. The presence or absence of associated enlarged lymph nodes in the chest can have prognostic value.

Hope this helps
