Gastroenterologist Questions Constipation

What causes chronic constipation?

I'm 42 years old, and I have been constipated for a week and half. I'm experiencing a lot of discomfort. What causes chronic or long-term constipation?

A week and a half is recent and not considered long-term constipation. You may try OTC laxatives and fiber supplements for a few days, but if it does not resolve, then please see a Gastroenterologist to rule out a more serious condition.
You may not be eating enough fruit and certainly not drinking enough water. Any change in bowel habits should be discussed with your primary care doctor.
Constipation is the result of the slowing down of the activity of the colon. The motility is impaired. We don't know exactly why it happens, but it is extremely common and can be feature of irritable bowel syndrome. The usual approach to treatment is to first alter the diet with a lot more fiber, natural laxative foods such as prunes, kiwis, laxative tea such as Smooth Move. Next is to add over the counter laxatives such as Miralax and dulcolax, daily or twice daily if needed. Finally, if the above is not sufficient, prescription medicines are available through a PCP or GI physician.
