Internal Medicine | Gastroenterology Questions Indigestion

What causes indigestion?

I'm a 35-year-old male and I experience indigestion very often. What am I doing wrong? Could this be because of my diet?

Likely that it’s your diet or drinking habits however, other serious health issues should be ruled out.
Indigestion is a very vague term. The most common cause of indigestion is acid reflux. This is seen commonly in people who are overweight, eat late at night, eat spicy food and high fat food. Treatment involves correcting the above factors and taking anti acid medication such as H2 bickers like ranitidine or Proton pump inhibitors like omeprazole.
Peptic ulcers can also cause indigestion and are associated with the use of NSAIDs like ibuprofen or naproxen. A bacteria called H pylori is associated with peptic ulcers. The same medications listed above are use to treat these conditions. If your symptoms return after a 2 week course of these medications or do not improve you should seek an appointment with a medical professional.
