Dermatologist Questions Toe Injuries and Disorders

What causes a toenail to curl?

I'm 22, and the toenails on both of my big toes tend to curl down into the actual toe. They are both extremely painful. What's the cause?

Tight shoes are one common cause. The nails are multilayered and thus laminated. When tight shoes cause one layer to grow faster, the nails bend and, in this case, downward.
In this particular situation, you have to keep you toenails cut extremely low because the nail growth pattern you have is of the kind that grows down ward. There are several forms how the nails grow. Keep them short.
This is an Ingrown toenail and generally needs to be surgically removed. It can be from your anatomy or the way you wear shoes or the type of shoes. It can also come from cutting of the nail too low down on the bed.

You should consult a dermatologist in your local area quickly before it gets infected.
Usually fungus in the nail, but there are a few skin diseases that can cause a toenail to curl.
