Family Practitioner Questions Infertility

What exactly causes infertility?

I'm 27 and want to start a family soon. A couple of my girl friends have had problems conceiving and I'm scared that it might happen to me too. What causes infertility so that I can do whatever I can to prevent it?

Great you want to start a family and that is a good thing. However, what happened to your friends cannot be extrapolated to you given everyone is different. That said, causes of infertility are multi-factorial, including structural defect of the reproductive organs, medical conditions, history of infection, internal pelvic condition such as endometriosis, fibroids, implantation defect, anovulation, polycystic ovarian syndrome, endocrine excesses, autoimmune disorders, and male factor.
One of the best things you can do at 27 is stay active and eat well. Obesity can cause or oral changes which can make getting pregnant harder. Also, get regular well woman visit and screen for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea regularly since these can cause scarring of the tubes if missed
It is difficult to prevent or predict. Most people such as yourself are waiting until later and on birth control for some time. If your cycles are regular, then you can predict ovulation better. You need to have that discussion with your ob/gyn more in depth.
