Gastroenterologist Questions Crohn's Disease

What fruits can you eat with Crohn's disease?

I am a 50 year old female and I have Crohn's. I am a very picky eater. What fruits can you eat with Crohn's disease?

There is no restriction of fruit needed for Crohn's disease in general. However, if you have a narrowed segment of bowel (e.g. stricture of the ileum) then you may need to be careful with fibrous foods like fruit skins, rinds and seeds.
I would recommend looking into a FODMAP diet and sticking to fruits that are low FODMAPs.
Crohn’s disease is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation scattered throughout the large bowel and in the end portions of your small bowel. While it can be controlled by medicine, it often can lead to flair ups of inflammation that are often accompanied by bloating, abdominal pain and blood in the stool (though that may not be visible). Abdominal pain can be increased by bloating during these flair ups and can be exacerbated by fiber intake as it is a bulking agent in the bowels. Many foods have fiber in them including fruits, vegetables, breads, grains, nuts and others. During a flair up, eating some of these foods in a larger quantity can cause more discomfort during one. Let me be clear on something though, you can eat most foods during regular day to day life. While some foods have been shown to cause inflammation and some foods are not really good for you in general (like fried or fast food), eating them in limited quantities is often okay. I hope this information is helpful to you.
That is a very individualized response. Trail and error along with a complete discussion with your GI doctor. Fiber, fiber, fiber, unless you already have loose stools.
Low-fiber fruits: bananas, cantaloupe, honeydew melon are recommended. Also, you can consume cooked fruits. Each patient is different and you have to identify what kind of food trigger your Crohn’s disease symptoms, please follow up with your doctor and your gastroenterologist for further information.
Most fruits contain sorbitol and that may worsen diarrhea due to Crohn’s disease.
