Rheumatologist Questions Lyme Disease

What happens if Lyme disease is left untreated?

My 16-year-old daughter had a tick just above her ankle and now we're worried about Lyme. She hasn't experienced any symptoms yet, but we aren't sure if we should take her to the doctor in case. What happens if Lyme disease isn't treated?

Monitor for any rash initially and take him to his pediatrician for treatment. If no rash develops some patients can develop 1 joint with arthritis, most commonly the knee. I would just monitor since you succeeded in take the tick off as it's unlikely to occur.
Take her to the doctor and see if a course of tetracycline is indicated.
Good evening,

Lymes disease can cause a variety of manifestations; typically a skin rash develops which then resolves and can be accompanied with fatigue and fevers and other such symptoms. Untreated Lymes disease can affect the nervous system, heart and can cause significant joint swelling and inflammation. I do feel evaluation by a physician and relevant testing for Lymes disease would be important. If she does have infection treatment is with simple antibiotics but if it remains untreated it can lead to significant problems and treatment then may not be as easy.

I hope the above information helps you.

Lyme disease can cause an infection. That causes a fever. That causes seizures and can cause paralyzed pt. You should see your Pediatrician.
