You blow out too much carbon dioxide, get tingling, what feels like shortness of breath, palpitations, vertigo, a feeling that you will die or go crazy. There are very effective treatments including breathing into a paper bag.
You can expect certain physiological effects but they can vary with the person. In general, a panic attack is going to activate the sympathetic nervous system. This means a higher heart rate, shallow breathing, and stress on the digestive system. If the panic is part of a longer pattern of stress and anxiety then you can have a PTSD situation where you get chronic
activation of the "flight or fight" response which can be quite debilitating.
