Gastroenterologist Questions Ulcerative Colitis

What is colitis?

I'm 42 and male, after experiencing a series of stomach cramps, my doctor told me that I have ulcerative colitis. What does this diagnosis mean? Is it serious?

If you were told you have ulcerative colitis, then you should have had that diagnosis made by colonoscopy. Yet UC, being a chronic inflammation of the colon, usually causes diarrhea, which you are not reporting. If you do in fact have UC, then it can be serious. It requires specific medicines to try to achieve remission. Don't settle for less that remission. A good GI doc should be able to treat UC effectively and achieve remission.
You need a diagnostic colonoscopy with biopsies to confirm the diagnosis. It is a chronic autoimmune condition of the large bowel and can have serious implications on your health so please have a complete discussion with your physician.
