Yes.
Best to take an X-ray. It could have a cavity under it.
It is possible to replace crowns. In my office the crown is remove by cutting a small hole in the crown and leveraging it off. The prep isnthen cleaned and a new crown is fabricated. This is a relatively common procedure. It would be important to first diagnose the etiology if the pain.
For a variety of reason, older dental crowns may require replacement. When a tooth that currently has a crown is causing pain, that is often an indication that a cavity may be forming under that crown. If the tooth, however has already had a root canal, although a cavity may be forming, you won’t experience pain in the form of sensitivity to hot/cold/sweets. The pain you may be experiencing may be a result of a dental infection from either a failed root canal treatment or a fractured tooth.

A consultation with your dentist is critical in diagnosing the reason for your discomfort. Once it is determined that your crown needs replacement, the current crown is ‘cut off’, the cavity/decay is removed and the tooth is rebuild/reprepared; an impression of the new crown preparation is taken (either in a digital or conventional form using impression materials) - this is sent to the dental laboratory to make a new crown. Meanwhile your dentist will send you home with a temporary crown. I hope this explanation helps. I hope you feel better and get taken care of soon!
Hi,

It’s always possible to replace crowns. You still them off and replace with new ones. The real issue is why the pain. To diagnose and get behind the etiology of the pain will ensure success with the new crown or even possibly retaining the current one. Hope this helps.
