OB-GYN (Obstetrician-Gynecologist) Questions Quad Marker Screen Test

What is a Quad test?

I am pregnant and our doctor told me to get a quad test. What is a Quad test? What will it detect?

A quad test invovles a blood test on the mother to detect certain markers of fetal problems, usually big defects and malformations. Added to an ultrasound, the information can be helpful to determine chance of baby having a trisomy 21 or other major syndrome.
“Quant” not Quad is a short form OBGYN doctors use for “Quantitative levels of hcg test”, it is used to figure out if it’s a normal pregnancy or to rule out ectopic pregnancy. It is helpful when 2 tests are done 48 hrs apart.

It is a blood test that measures four parameters to determine if the fetus has down's syndrome or a neural tube defect. It is usually done between 16 an 20 weeks. It is not 100% accurate and, if positive, the more invasive test (amniocentesis) would be recommended.
