Gastroenterologist Questions Stomach atrophy

What is stomach atrophy?

I've been to many doctors over the years about my digestive system, and they say I have stomach atrophy without giving a good explanation for it. What exactly is stomach atrophy?

In this context, atrophy means that the stomach lining has thinned and there is loss of the normal cells of the stomach mucosa. This may result in reduced acid production in the stomach. Oftentimes, this is called atrophic gastritis. This is my best guess as to what is going on given the limited information provided.
Atrophic gastritis is an autoimmune condition and needs proper follow up to prevent nutritional deficiencies. It is sometimes associated with a precancerous condition and needs follow up with a Gastroenterologist.
It sounds like you must mean “atrophic gastritis” and you can look up this term online. It is related to inflammation of the stomach to where the stomach doesn’t absorb certain things as well and gets a little bit Fibrotic (like scarred). Sometimes it is caused by your own body’s immune system and sometimes it is caused by infection with a bacteria called H pylori.
