What is the best ADHD medication for a child?

My son is 12 years old and he has ADHD. What is the best ADHD medication for a child?

Ritalin. I prefer not to use the long-acting variety.
ADHD must first be diagnosed after objective psychometric testing by a qualified psychologist or psychiatrist. Once that diagnosis has been made, you should discuss options with your trained pediatrician or developmental/behavioral pediatrician. Medications in the class called 'stimulants" are considered typical first line therapy based on available evidence, but the ultimate decision should be made between you, your child, and your child's pediatrician.
