What is the difference between porcelain and zirconia crowns?

I am a 34 year old male. I will get a crown. What is the difference between porcelain and zirconia crowns?

Zirconia is a porcelain crown. It is a very hard porcelain and is generally used on back teeth because they tent to be monochromatic. We use these when esthetics is not as big of a concern. Porcelain crowns (I.e. Emax) are generally more esthetic and used on anterior teeth. They are very good restorations.
We can use layered zirconia crowns which is a good combination of both materials.
Zirconia is a harder material with less chance of cracking or chipping. Porcelain is ceramic and Is esthetically more pleasing to the eye. Best to use full zirconia for posterior teeth.
It depends on what type of material the lab your Dentist uses, but generally speaking, porcelain crowns are made of a material called lithium disilicate, which is a different material than zirconium.

The good thing, is they are both white! Your general Dentist can talk to you more about which type they are using, as the different types are ideal for different teeth in the mouth.
