Eye infections in both children and adults fall into two major types; bacterial and viral. Bacterial infections need antibiotic drops. Viral infections do not, and usually resolve on their own in a few days, although some eye doctors will use a steroid eye drop on a limited basis. Bacterial infections of the eye cause redness, are uncomfortable and have a yellow or green eye discharge. Viral infections are also red, but tend to have a clear watery discharge. There are many antimicrobial eye drops used for bacterial infections. Your doctor probably has a favorite one to use. Please consult your physician.

Eye infections can vary from conjunctivitis (pink eye), styles, hordeolums, periorbital cellulitis (infection of skin around the eye), to orbital cellulitis. So, the best medicines are determined by what type of eye infection you have and may vary from eye drops or ointments, to oral antibiotics, to intravenous antibiotics and/or the need for surgery. Your physician can diagnose the type of eye infection and the best treatment.

Eye infections can be bacterial or viral, the patient needs to be seen to get the proper diagnosis and treat treatment. There is no over-the-counter eye infection treatment.
