What to do when it hurts to swallow?

I am a 29 year old male. It hurts when I swallow water or saliva. What could be the cause?

Dysphagia, pain on swallowing, is a symptom that may have a number of causes ranging from simple pharyngitis (bacterial or viral) to throat or esophageal cancer. I recommend you see an Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon or an Otolaryngologist (ENT) surgeon.
The differential is lengthy; please see an Otolarygologist.
Tonsilitis, strep throat, mono....go see an ENT or your internist...you may need antibiotics.
