What type of anesthesia is used for kidney stone surgery?

My 13-year-old daughter needs to have kidney stones removed. What type of anesthesia is used for kidney stone surgery?

If this is an open procedure, then the anesthesia is general. In case of litotripsia, then it's intravenous sedation.
Kidney stones are extremely painful. Some say it is more painful than child birth when they pass. As such, it would have to be general anaesthesia.
