Gastroenterologist Questions Gas

Why do I have constant gas?

I've been dealing with a gas problem for over a year now. I don't know why, but I've been passing gas no matter what I eat. Why do you think I have this?

It is normal to pass gas. You will pass more gas depending on what you eat. Most flatulence is the result of carbohydrate malabsorption. Beans are a classic example of a food that promotes gas formation in the colon. This is because carbs in beans cannot be digested by the gut and these carbs end up in the colon where they are broken down by bacteria with gas as a byproduct. But there are many other fruits and vegetables that will do the same thing. A low FODMAP diet is effective to reduce gas.
Before you go to a doctor, try eliminating the following from your diet: Peas and beans (though green beans are probably OK), nuts, especially peanuts, onion & garlic, milk products, members of the cabbage family including broccoli and cauliflower. I recommend you start by going lactose-free for a couple of weeks, then try using Lactaid products (which don't have lactose and are a tiny bit sweeter).
