Why do my son's ankles hurt when he walks?

I am 34 year old mom. My 4 year old son's ankles hurts when he walks. What could be the cause?

He would need an orthopaedic exam by a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon to determine the cause. There are too many unknowns in your short question and without a proper history and physical examination this is impossible to answer.
Children usually do not complain of pain much. Therefore, if it is a significant complaint should be evaluated by a pediatric orthopedic surgeon and x-rays should be obtained at the ankles. Do not put it off.

If there hasn't been a fall or injury, then it's probably just a tendonitis related to his activity. Try rest, and advil (dose on bottle) 2-3 times a day. However, there are many other serious things that could be the cause. So, if he doesn't get better with rest and advil after a week or two, then see an orthopedic specialist.
Hope it helps!!

He most likely sustained an ankle sprain. He should be checked to rule out stress fracture.
