Beyond environmental factors, there are social factors that contribute to Long Island's increased breast cancer risk.  One of these risk factors is the age a woman gives birth.  According to many well documented studies, having children past the age of 28 increases your risk of having breast cancer.  With a faster lifestyle where women are pursuing demanding professional careers, many Long Island women are waiting to give birth into their 30's and some choose to not start a family at all.  Unbeknownst to many- this can dramatically impact the odds of getting breast cancer.
