Large Population of Jewish Women
Long Island's large Jewish population has also contributed to it being a cancer cluster. Among individuals of Ashkenazi Jewish descent, researchers have found that these Jewish women are frequent carriers of the genes which have been identified in breast cancer. The BRCA1 and the BRCA2 gene appear in about 1 in 40 Jewish women vs 1 in 345 compared to the rest of the population. These numbers explain why many Jewish women get breast cancer at much higher rates.
