After Breast Cancer Diagnosis, Woman Becomes Her Sister's Surrogate

Despite being unusual, a family surrogate is a good match

Having a family member act as the surrogate for a childbirth is actually very unusual, even though it could be a good match. Dr. Jeanne O'Brien oversaw the women's care at Shady Grove Fertility, and comments on how she has not seen surrogacies of this nature often: "This was an amazing experience to help a couple facing a devastating diagnosis preserve their ability to not only have children but children that would not face the genetic cancer risk of the BRCA gene. The involvement of Randi's sister strengthened the shared commitment to achieving another successful pregnancy. I'm grateful to have been their physician.”
