BRCA Gene May Predict Drug Resistance in Ovarian Cancer, Study Finds

One of the biggest breakthroughs in the history of breast cancer research was discovering that the BRCA gene was related to a genetic risk for developing these tumors. Now, the researchers might have found that the gene can also help guide doctors when deciding treatment options for people with ovarian cancer.
BRCA-positive families usually find that many of their members have breast or ovarian cancer. When people inherit the gene it means they have one mutated copy and one normal copy. There are 2 main types of mutations associated with cancer, BRCA 1 and BRCA 2. It’s estimated that 5% of all breast cancer and 20% of all ovarian cancers are related to these gene mutations.
