Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Getting Involved

Avoiding metastatic breast cancer

Many cases of breast cancer are curable if caught early. One exception to this is metastatic breast cancer, for which there is currently no cure. In people with metastatic breast cancer, the cancer already spread to other areas of the body prior to detection, rendering typical treatments such as lumpectomies and mastectomies ineffective. Efforts to increase early detection can help prevent breast cancer from evolving into metastatic cancer. Additionally, one of the focuses of BCAM is fundraising for palliative care, which will improve the quality of life for people living with metastatic cancer.

Flowers also emphasizes efforts in precision medicine, which means matching the specific drug to the patient in order to reduce drug resistance.
