In addition to being younger at time of diagnosis, Chinese officials have also been charting an increase in the number of documented cases of breast cancer. Officials report that about 279,000 new cases of breast cancer are reported each year which indicates a 2% growth in documented cases from year to year. Dr. Zhang Jin noted that while self-examination is important, it’s also important for China to continue developing other diagnostic methods that will be accessible to a wide spectrum of women. The hope is that with increased knowledge and technology, China may be able to curb this growing trend.
