Combining Drugs May Improve Ovarian Cancer Survival
Changing gene expression to teach the immune system to destroy cells
The scientists believe that the changes seen when cancer cells were treated with 5-azacytidine actually caused the tumor cells to recruit immune cells to their location. Interestingly, when researchers used untreated cells in mice that were then treated with a combination of 5-azacytidine and histone deacetylase inhibitor, mice had more immune cells in their abdominal fluid as well as lower tumor burden and improved ascites. Mice on combination therapy ended up living longer than those who received 5-azacytidine alone.
