Charlene recalls a shift in breast cancer awareness when female celebrities started openly talking about their experiences with breast cancer. Women like Babette Rosmond, Shirley Temple, Betty Ford, recently Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and of course Susan G. Komen changed the face of the conversation about breast cancer.
Susan G. Komen’s sister Nancy Brinker founded the Susan G. Komen Foundation in 1982 following her sister’s death and one year before her own diagnosis with breast cancer. This was the first public effort to raise money for breast cancer awareness and research. Soon other people and organizations followed suit.
