New Marker Could Detect Fatal Breast Cancer Earlier

Conclusions of the study

Being able to detect cancer in the body before a cancerous mass develops may be a critical step forward in raising cancer survivability overall, especially in more aggressive forms of cancer. However, the discovery is only the beginning of what will now be an effort to find a way to treat or prevent fatal breast cancer from growing. New studies are now underway to see if women with EFC#93 can be treated with the same anti-hormonal therapies that treat certain types of breast cancer.

The study marks that first time that blood serum has been analyzed and connected to the development of fatal breast cancer. Both the method and the results are incredibly specific. Even more impressive—the study was able to find cancer up to an entire year earlier than existing methods. Widschwendter says that “this may enable individualized treatment, which could even begin in the absence of radiological evidence in the breast.” Such a prospect would be invaluable to those facing fatal breast cancer, and might shift the tides against such cancers permanently.
