New Research: Using Mathematics to Treat Ovarian Cancer

Stopping the spread of ovarian cancer

Stopping the spread of ovarian cancer

“Regarding the University’s ovarian cancer study, they modeled the behavior of two types of cadherin, a protein, and how cells with the protein interacted with abdominal tissue. One type, N-cadherin, allows cancer cells to invade healthy tissue. Cancer cells with E-cadherin, a different form of the protein, can’t break through the walls of the healthy cells. The GC-4 antibody made N-cadherin carrying cells behave as if they had the E-cadherin protein. They failed to metastasize” (Mark Muckenfuss. The Press/Empire. August 13, 2017).

The Alber-Stack study isolated the GC-4 antibody and learned of its ability to render abdominal tissue unable to “accept” cancerous cells, interfering with the spread of ovarian cancer. These study findings could markedly improve ovarian cancer survival rates.
