In the U.S., the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) is the agency which sets standards enforced by the FDA regarding the quality and purity of drugs, dietary supplements, and food in the United States. Last year, the USP also called for more stringent screening to identify asbestos in talc products. According to a senior official with the USP, Dr. Kevin Moore, the agency is working on better tests which will likely make use of transmission electron microscopy to greatly magnify tiny particles in talc for analysis.
It is hoped that through the legal process to determine if talcum powder is indeed a pre-cursor to ovarian cancer, the courts will demonstrate concern for those afflicted and that our government leaders will feel called to tighten the rein on talc oversight.
